History of the Holy Name Society at Maria Regina R.C.C.
1st Installment, August, 2011
Pictured here at the old meeting room (in the A. & S. Pork Store on the corner of Pine Street and Broadway in Massapequa) are Fr. Bradley and the founding members of the Maria Regina Holy Name Society. As you can see, most of them were not always the "Church elders" but were young working men with families to raise and a strong commitment to our parish and our Catholic faith. This photo was taken in 1956 and this year we celebrate 55 years of continuous service to our parish and our Pastors.
I'm told that back then, if your children were to attend Maria Regina's Catholic School, Dad was required to join the HNS and Mom joined the Rosary Society. Of course this was an unwritten rule but it made for the sizable gathering shown in the photo. Recruiting new members should be that simple nowadays! The faith and commitment of our founders remains with the membership of the Holy Name Society as do several of the men pictured here. Time has thinned our ranks but we still add new members annually. This year the HNS contributed many hours of service and financial support to Maria Regina parish including a new AED for the church and new collection baskets.
I'd like to hear from anyone who recognizes themselves or someone else in the picture and has some stories or history to share. I want to thank Gene Meyer, Past President of the HNS for supplying the photo. Gene and Irene Quinn have provided copies of the HNS newspaper, "The Guide" and I will be sharing some of the "old news" with you in future installments. Please contact me at the phone number or email me at the address shown at the top of this page. Until next time, God Bless You and your families.
